Texas Intruments (TI; 17.98) reported a decrease in profits and revenues for the third quarter. Investments in R&D are also down to $507 millions compare to $542 millions for the same period a year ago. The number of US patents issued to Texas Instruments is also down declining by 5% for the first three quarters of 2008 compare to the same period a year ago. The decline in issued patents started in 2006 when 885 patents were issued to TI compared to 773 in 2007 and 573 so far this year (as of September 30).

However, the number of published US patent applications (a reflection of of Texas Instrument patent filing activity) increased from 497 for the first three quarters of 2007 to 589 for the same period this year.
