The number of US patents in molecular biology and microbiology awarded to companies and individuals remains the highest in California. The number of patents in this field awarded for companies in Massachusetts has stagnated since 2005 and is about 3 to 4 times less than in California. North Carolina has seen an important growth with 52% increase in the number of patent awarded but the output for North Carolina is about 10% that of California.
